School to Careers Odyssey Overview
"When are we ever going to use this?"
Teachers who have heard this statement from students will want to tune in to School to Careers Odyssey, a career exploration series produced by Iowa Public Television (IPTV). The School to Careers Odyssey features Iowa career professionals at work in a variety of occupations. This series was produced to assist Iowa educators as they help students connect school curriculum to the world of work.
The School to Careers Odyssey series is available to Iowa educators from the Area Education Agencies (AEAs). Duplication rights exist for educational uses. The series is also available for duplication periodically (typically twice during the school year) from IPTV's broadcast signal. See the School to Careers Odyssey page within IPTV's K-12 Classroom online catalog and click on the "View Calendar of Air Dates and Times" link to see a list of upcoming dates and times.
Agriscience and Natural Resources Pathway
The careers of zookeeper, organic specialist and park ranger are profiled. All work in Iowa and all love their jobs!
Arts and Communications Pathway
What do a photographer, newspaper reporter, composer and sound recordist have in common? They represent careers requiring outstanding communication skills.
Business, Information Management and Marketing Pathway
Tourism in Iowa? A tourism director and dining manager of a historic hotel are two of the featured career professionals in this program. Also included are a banker and marketing director.
Engineering, Industrial and Technological SciencesPathway
An air show producer, civil engineer, metallurgist and tonal director are featured in this program showcasing careers in several industries in Iowa.
Family and Human Services Pathway
The IPTV video crew shadows a sign language translator, child care provider, corrections officer and volleyball coach.
Health Sciences Pathway
Careers in the health field are featured in this program highlighting a prosthetist, nurse anesthetist, optometrist and registered nurse. Career professionals emphasize the importance of teamwork and dependability on the job.
