Career Profile:
Small Animal Veterinarian #1046
This small animal veterinarian owns a small animal clinic in an urban Iowa community. He has always loved animals and is very active with the Animal Rescue League in his community. He knew right away that he wanted to be a veterinarian, so his high school counselor helped him schedule all the math and science courses that he would need for college. He had a pre-veterinary major in college and spent four more years in veterinary school. He passed his state board exams and began practicing with a doctor who decided to retire and sell his practice. The timing was perfect and he jumped at the opportunity to buy the business.
He prefers working with small animals, since he enjoys working with their owners so much. Most of his work is with pet owners who bring in their pets when the pets have been injured or are sick. Although he is primarily treating the animal, he will tell you that he spends just as much time with the pet’s owner, asking and answering questions, providing instructions, and offering support.
It is important for him to have good ‘bedside manner’ skills. On a typical day, he sees the animal patients and their owners, documents everything he does to treat the animals, meets with pharmaceutical and other business-related representatives and manages the clinic staff.
