This airport director has experienced many different aviation environments, from a local grass strip runway to a full scale international hub. She says that once she got a taste of the fast-paced and exciting world of aviation she knew it was the right career choice.
In college, she took classes in aircraft management and states that now it is the norm to have a degree in that subject. A pilot's license or at least a technical knowledge of aviation is extremely helpful. Many companies provide further training to keep employees up to date in this ever-changing field.
For her position, it is very important to know how to manage money, a budget, and to understand accounting. Marketing skills are also very crucial. "You must be able to sell the airport," she says. Dealing with people is another aspect of this job that she enjoys. There are many times when customer relations are key to being sucsessful. This Airport Director likes being in a smaller airport with a hometown atmosphere. She says more care can be given to the customer.
