Career Profile:
Web Designer/Art Director #1229
A Web designer's job is similar to an architect's according to this career professional. His job requires planning a Web site, coordinating the different elements of the "look and feel" of the site, then organizing and tying together the elements as they are built. Architects do something similar by first drawing up construction plans and then making sure the structure is built to specifications. Web designers use graphic design skills and basic computer programming knowledge. This Web designer suggests a four-year college degree, but also says it isn't always required. He also feels that being able to speak in front of people is a good talent to have and says he spends about 50 per cent of his time doing this. Since math is the language of computers, it is good to have a solid math background. Web designers are sometimes considered artists but this career professional stresses that there is a difference between art and design. Art, he says, is done for you. People don't necessarily need to understand it. It is a personal expression of some sort. Design is done for a purpose. The purpose involves a user and a client, and they both have to understand the design and how to use it. Knowing the difference between the two is important. A love of technology, learning, art, design and people will contribute to a successful career as a Web designer.
