Career Profile: Draftsperson #1201
Mechanical aptitude seems to run in the family of this draftsperson. He grew up around his grandfatherÂ’s machine shop and says the best part was figuring out how to put things together. In high school, he enjoyed math classes and thought about becoming an engineer. After high school, he attended one of Iowa's universities to earn a degree in industrial technology.
After college, he held various jobs and was drawn to drafting. At that time, drafting tools were a pencil and paper. When the field went high-tech he adjusted quickly. Computer Assisted Design (CAD) has virtually replaced pencil and paper drafting.
Eventually, he took a job at the Iowa branch of a leading international water tank building company. The company was looking for drafters with excellent math, computer and organizational skills. Over time, he has moved up to "squad leader," which involves training and supervising other drafters, as well as drafting his own assignments.
He is responsible for drafting top-of-the-line structures, often holding a million gallons of water or more. On the job, he combines creativity, math skills, computer skills and mechanical aptitude. He says he gets paid for doing a job he loves.
