Career Profile: Court Reporter #1188
In high school this court reporter was encouraged by an English teacher’s comment that she would make a good court reporter. She knew she loved English and after a visit to a mock trial, she knew this was the career she wanted to pursue.
Her job duties include taking testimony, preparing transcripts and jury instructions and organizing and securing exhibits. She uses a stenotype machine to do this.
The stenotype resembles a typewriter yet is different. Using the stenotype is similar to playing chords on a piano in that all ten fingers are used at the same time. With this technology, testimony can be captured in "real time," eliminating delays during the court process.
Even though there are numerous job opportunities using the stenotype technology in other fields, she enjoys being in the middle of "all the action" of the courtroom.
