Career Profile:
Director of Pharmacy #1174

A pharmacist wears many "hats" according to this southern Iowa professional. As a pharmacist in a hospital, one of his "hats" says prescription drug resource. He needs to be available not only to physicians and nurses but also to patients. If any of these people have questions about a drug, he is there to answer them. He also has a dispensing "hat" at the hospital. Doctors prescribe medications and, as a pharmacist, he makes the drugs available to the physicians and nurses in an organized manner. Acquisition and inventory of the prescription drugs is another "hat" he wears. In addition, the hospital pharmacy is also a business. He works with budgets and scheduling when wearing his business "hat."

Pharmacists work daily with math, chemistry and computers. His degree in pharmacy required five years of college. He says these days students going to college to be a pharmacist are required to take six years of college, earning them a doctor of pharmacy degree.

He enjoys the diversity of his career. From emergency room consultations to mixing IVs and chemotherapy treatments to dispensing prescription drugs, this pharmacist enjoys something different everyday.
