Career Profile:
Physical Therapist #1166

"First you crawl, then you walk, then you run," says this physical therapist. This applies not only to children but also to patients going through physical therapy. His patients' injuries range from a sore heel that has been painful for months to a burn victim who has to regain muscular mobility.

As a physical therapist, he feels he spends much more time with his patients than a doctor does. Most patients visit his office two to three times a week for several weeks. This allows a strong personal bond to develop. Patients are looking to him to teach them how to repair their bodies and encourage them to do so.

His career as a physical therapist took a lot of study in math and science. He advises students to take advanced math and science courses in high school so they are ready for a tough physical therapy curriculum in college. Competition is high when it comes to applying to physical therapy school. When asked what kind of personality makes a good physical therapist, he responds, "You have to like people. You have to be good at communicating with people."
