Clothing Designer #1138 - Tape Number: 1138

Career Profile:
Clothing Designer #1138

To become a fashion designer, you need a good education, says this northwest Iowa designer. She designs mother-of-the-bride, cocktail and special occasion dresses right here in Iowa. Her designs are sold at stores in 48 states and in Switzerland.

This popular clothing designer recommends sewing classes as well as business courses. There are four steps to designing a dress, she says. The first step is the sketch. She gets her ideas for sketches from watching the styles on television (ex. the Oscars) and from keeping an eye on the fashion world.

The next step is the pattern. After a pattern is made, a sample dress is sewn. She tries every sample dress on herself to see how it flows, moves and feels. She then decides if any changes should be made and if the dress should be added to her line. Trips to New York and Chicago are frequent activities for this entrepreneur. She attends fashion shows and fabric shows and even has her own showrooms in New York and Atlanta.

This glamorous career really does take a lot of hard work, she says, but the customer satisfaction is worth it!
