This athletic trainer got his start by being involved in high school athletics. He went on to college and got a B.A. in Therapeutic Recreation. He says that degree programs at the college level have greatly expanded over the years, and now it is possible to study a variety of majors in the field of sports medicine. Training in First Aid and CPR is beneficial to high school students who want to become athletic trainers. Volunteering as a coach for a youth sports league during the summer is a way to experience working in an athletic capacity. Special national camps and workshops are also available to students; he suggests these programs as a good introduction to careers in sports medicine.
Developing technical and computer skills is becoming more important in this line of work.The state university where this athletic trainer is employed uses ultrasound machines and keeps an extensive computer database.
Mastering interpersonal and communication skills is crucial because working as an athletic trainer involves dealing with people on a daily basis. Team members can become like a family, so knowing how to facilitate strong teamwork is helpful. He advises students not to decide on a career too early in life, but to take the time to find a job they really love.
