Career Profile:
Computer Numerical Control Machinist #1012
This computer numerically controlled (CNC) machinist works in a team with a computer aided design (CAD) drafter in a plastics manufacturing company.
As a team, they take rough sketches from the company engineers and translate the sketches into a computer program for a machine. The machines cut and shape production pieces automatically. He believes by working with a drafter in a team, they are more productive.
He has the ability to see the big picture concerning design and production. This helps him visualize what needs to be done, which increases productivity. Part of his job is to take new computer programs from the drafter, load them and work out the "bugs" in the new programs.
Being a problem solver saves time and he is a natural in a team setting. When he started in the 1980's, much of the technology he uses today did not exist. Because of his quick learning skills, he adapted to the new equipment as it came in, and continues to do so.
