This naturalist asked himself some deep questions before choosing his career path. What is it that makes him real? What would he be willing to fall in love with? He thought of old family photo albums; as a child he was always the one holding a turtle, knee deep in a creek or watching butterflies. He realized his love for nature and devoted himself to learning about the natural world.
He studied biology at a university and planned to escape to the life of a homesteader in Alaska after graduation. But before leaving to Alaska, he realized there was much work to be done here in Iowa. He became a science teacher and often brought the beauty of the outdoors into his classroom.
Even though he loved being a teacher, when he learned about a job opening as a naturalist, he jumped at the opportunity. He now has many "students" ranging in age from preschoolers to senior citizens in his "classroom" on the trail, under the stars or in the forest.
He says his job involves several skills such as public speaking, technical office skills, as well as a scientific knowledge of plants, animals and geology. He loves his job and encourages others to imagine what they would be truly happy doing for the rest of their lives--then not fear to pursue it.
