Career Profile: Flying Instructor / Director #1033
This flight instructor is co-owner of a small charter airline in Iowa. His responsibilities include flight instruction and management of the charter business. He also negotiates prices for charter flights and manages the office staff, aircraft mechanics, and hanger rental business.
This pilot is happiest in a plane teaching someone how to fly. He considers himself a 'people person' and continuously works to improve his communication skills. It is vital for him to communicate clearly so his students understand how to fly a plane and solve problems during a flight. He believes their safety depends on how well they were taught.
Pilots face considerable competition for jobs due to the glamorous nature of the work. Although prestige and high pay may be associated with large commercial airlines, he tells his students they may never work for a major airline or make big salaries. Yet, if they can live on an entry-level salary, they should be able to find work with a small, private company.
