Editor #1024 - Tape Number: 1024

Career Profile:
Editor #1024

To be an editor was the goal of this central Iowa biweekly newspaper editor since he graduated from one of Iowa's private colleges twenty years ago. He recently attended his twenty year college class reunion and chuckles about some of the writing he did as editor of the college newspaper. He laughs because he now knows the importance of understanding what will appeal to his readers and plans features around their interests.

Since he is currently working with a group of young, inexperienced reporters, he usually needs to plan their work and provide assignments for them. He often times needs to rewrite or edit their work. He would like to have a more experienced staff, but finds it hard to entice experienced reporters to rural Iowa, since he cannot compete with the pay and benefits available in the urban areas of the Midwest.

Although he could make more money himself working for a larger paper in an urban area, he and his family enjoy small town life in Iowa. They like the friendly community, the school, and the recreational activities available in the area.
