Career Profile: Product Designer #1185
This product designer says her career is fun because she gets to draw and put puzzles together. An avid art student in high school, she loved drawing and wanted to become a commercial artist. In her senior year, she took a drafting class with a friend. They were the only two girls in the class!
Even though mechanical design was a "non-traditional" career choice, she knew this was the perfect job for her interests. After high school, she earned a two-year degree in mechanical design. Classes included technical physics, welding processes, fluid mechanics and mathematics. She says skills learned in speech classes are extremely helpful while making a presentation or pitching a design project.
Today, she uses a computer assisted drafting (CAD) program to put motor home designs into a three-dimensional mode so manufacturing can construct the vehicles. She spends a lot of time studying prints, problem-solving and gathering measurements before putting it in 3-D. She says the most exciting part of her career is watching the finished product come down the production line.
