Describe a typical "challenge" encountered in your work:
Pest control technicians have responsibilities that involve identifying and implementing proper and safe pest control. Finding the source of an infestation can be difficult and sometimes hidden from easy view. Using proper control techniques, which primarily use non-chemical means, are foremost in our minds. We use integrated pest management methods.
Clearly describe what you expect from the students:
You have an ant problem. How will you locate and control this problem in the most effective and safe manner?
In order to give the teacher some guidance in evaluating the student's project(s); list some tips that may help to assess the student's work:
Teachers should check to see if the students have researched the newer innovative techniques or have used traditional ideas from the past. We are very environmentally conscious about overuse of chemicals to treat pest problems. Rather than dousing with chemicals, we observe the activity around the apparent problem and try to determine the source of entry. Once the entry point is detected, techniques such as filling in holes, removing nesting areas, and setting baits are utilized. Bait stations are appealing because the eliminate the need for spraying of chemicals. Pests are attracted to the baits and carry the material back to their nests where they ingest the deadly bait. The Iowa State University Extension Web site is a good site for research about pest management: http://www.extension.iastate.edu/polk/hort/pubs.html
