Describe a typical "challenge" encountered in your work:
Two citizens call in and report a problem with fugitive dust from a gravel road being used by trucks to haul petroleum contaminated soil to a field next to a river on the edge of town.
Clearly describe what you expect from the students:
Students need to: (1) investigate the complaints; (2) determine whether any environmental regulations are being violated (3) take action to ensure that the parties involved resolve any violations.
In order to give the teacher some guidance in evaluating the student's project(s); list some tips that may help to assess the student's work:
-Did students do a records check to determine previous problems? -Did they research environmental regulations regarding fugitive dust (air quality), land application of petroleum contaminated soils, floodplain development and leaking underground storage tanks? -Did they conduct a field investigation to determine if the dust is sufficient to cause a nuisance? -Did they determine if the soil was being placed in a floodplain or near a waterway? -Did they determine what site the soil came from? -Did they interview the complainers (if known? -Did they determine the responsible party and inform them of the regulations? -Did they make sure the responsible party took timely action to mitigate any problems? (control dust, properly apply soil, obtain necessary permits, etc.) -Did they follow up later to ensure the problem doesn't reoccur? -Did they inform the complainers of their findings?
