Describe a typical "challenge" encountered in your work:
Once the operas for each session are decided, a challenge we face is to determine if there are rental sets available for use that will fit the stage space, or if the productions will need to be designed and created especially for our stage.

Clearly describe what you expect from the students:
Research an opera and design a set for it. Discuss the artistic vision of the production with directors/designers. (Students can play the roles of director and designer.) Determine the physical capabilities of the stage space (i.e. stage size, wing space, fly space, etc.) (Use your school stage as a model.) Create a budget including scene rental (or building) costs, transportation of scenery or materials and load in and load out personnel. Present scenery for consideration to the artistic staff. (Students can play the roles of the artistic staff.

In order to give the teacher some guidance in evaluating the student's project(s); list some tips that may help to assess the student's work:
The process would include: -getting accurate measurements of the stage space to be used (includes storage space, loading dock, etc.) -create a budget -determine the number of personnel needed for load-in, load-out, set up, running the show, etc.
