Describe a typical "challenge" encountered in your work:
As a County Extension worker, I must promote many programs to the public. In most cases I have a limited budget, so I need to decide what would be the most effective way to target an audience. I have a number of resources to help with the promotions: news articles and radio programs that are free of charge. When I send out letters, I have the expense of postage and secretarial time.

Clearly describe what you expect from the students:
We are promoting a "Household Toxic Cleanup Day." This involves students so that they will encourage their parents to participate, and we hope that students will be more aware of the importance of properly disposing of toxic materials.

We will have approximately $400 to use for advertising, including the development of brochures, mailers and other print materials. We would like to do most of this promotion within a two-month period, prior to the actual event in April. This event will be a countywide activity, so we will be involving all the schools in the county (four public and one parochial) and 10 communities in the county.

In order to give the teacher some guidance in evaluating the student's project(s); list some tips that may help to assess the student's work:
Items to evaluate would be:

1.How did the students decide where they wanted to target their advertising dollars?

2.What were some creative ways of reaching the students to help them get involved? Did they decide on certain grade levels, and how would they have the students publicize this information to their parents or adult friends?

3.In developing their publicity, did they have some very specific ideas of what would stimulate people to respond to a Household Toxic Cleanup Day? Did they take into account that there may need to be some explanation to people who are unfamiliar with why you should properly dispose of toxic chemicals or household items?

4.We have approximately 3,600 households in the county, what realistic goal would they set, and how would they determine how many households they hope will respond to this program?
