Describe a typical "challenge" encountered in your work:
People may have unclear perceptions of what a therapist does. Terms associated with therapy are often confusing to the public. Consequently, therapists may have to overcome basic misconceptions as they face the world of work each day.
Clearly describe what you expect from the students:
Questions for discussion: 1) What do you think would lead a person to seek out the services of a therapist? What issues or concerns might they be facing or dealing with? 2) What do you think a therapist does? What role does a therapist take with a client? 3) Some therapists call their customers "patients" and some call them "clients." Do you think there is a difference, and if you do, what is the difference? Would it feel different to you to be considered one or the other? 4) Do you know anyone who has been to see a therapist? If yes, how did you think or feel about that person after you found out? Was it different than before you found out? 5) Would you ever consider going to see a therapist? Would you tell anyone if you did? 6) What are some reasons people might give for never seeking the services of a therapist? 7) Do you think more males or females seek the services of a therapist? Why do you think there would be a difference? 8) Do you know the differences between psychotherapists, psychiatrists, psychologist, social workers, marital and family therapist, mental health counselors and school counselors? 9) Do you know what kind of education is required in order to be qualified for licensure as a therapist?
In order to give the teacher some guidance in evaluating the student's project(s); list some tips that may help to assess the student's work:
Use basic reference tools, search the Internet, or visit with a therapist to respond to the discussion questions. Or, if you are a student in an Iowa K-12 school district, ask your teacher to contact cheryl@iptv.org to learn how your class can interact with a therapist to learn about his profession.
