Analyzing Information

Describe a typical "challenge" encountered in your work:
Sometimes injuries occur at the worst possible time of the season and for certain players. I have great resources, but they cannot overcome the inevitable loss of playing time. I have to decide what resources to maximize, and how to approach the player, coaches and team with a plan.

Clearly describe what you expect from the students:
Your leading scorer, a senior, and team leader suffers a serious knee injury one-week prior to the Big 10 Championships. After researching the limitations placed on a basketball player by a severe medial collateral knee sprain, establish a plan to use the team physician and other resources to the maximum benefit of the player. In developing a plan, you should consider the following:
1) The standard of care established for this injury,
2) The length of time usual recovery,
3) The psychological impact on the player and the team,
4) What information to discuss with the player, coaches, and team.

In order to give the teacher some guidance in evaluating the student's project(s); list some tips that may help to assess the student's work:
Tips for assessment:
1) Did the students review enough sources to provide options in treatment plans?
2) Did they discover that the athlete may not (likely not) be able to play at the championships?
3) Did they find out how to use the Team Physician as a medical resource and a supporter of an overall play?
4) Did they discover psychological stage theory?
5) Did they resolve to use early communication and empathy in dealing with the player, coach, and team?
